Grill grates: how to choose the right one (size, shape, convenience)

Less
A grill grate is the best upgrade if you want to cook more than skewers: steaks, fish, vegetables, burgers. The key factors are size (stable fit), shape, and everyday convenience.
1) Choose the right size
- Measure the cooking area of your mangal/grill (inner width and length) where the grate will rest.
- The grate should sit stable and not slip or drop inside.
- If unsure, choose a grate that’s slightly smaller rather than “too tight”.
2) Pick the shape for your cooking style
- Rectangular – the most universal option for mangals, good for larger batches.
- Round – often used for charcoal grills with a lid.
- With a clamp/basket – easy flipping for fish and vegetables in one move.
3) What really matters for convenience
- Handles: comfortable grip and they shouldn’t block the lid (if you have a lid grill).
- Side walls/height: helps keep small pieces and vegetables in place.
- Bar spacing: smaller foods usually need a “tighter” grate.
4) Which grate for which food
- Steaks/burgers/patties: a standard grate.
- Fish: a clamp grate to flip easily without breaking.
- Vegetables: a grate with side walls or tighter spacing.
5) Useful add-ons
- Grill brush – easiest cleaning right after cooking.
- Grill tongs – turn food without piercing it.
- Cover – if you store it outdoors or in a humid place.
Quick tip: send us your cooking area size (length × width) or your mangal/grill model, and we’ll recommend the best grate and format (standard or clamp).
